TMUA scores explained

TMUA results are reported as one overall score on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0, not as a mark out of 40. This page explains what the scale is for, why no single score is good for every course, and how to read yours.

How results are reported

You receive a single overall score on the 1.0 to 9.0 scale, given to one decimal place: Papers 1 and 2 are scaled together, not reported separately. Scores are equated across test versions and sittings, so the same score means the same level whichever version you sat, in October or in January. Results appear in your UAT-UK account on Monday 16 November 2026 for the October sitting and on 8 February 2027 for the January one. UAT-UK's own results page (esat-tmua.ac.uk/test-results) explains how the scale is set.

Why there is no pass mark

There are no fixed grade boundaries either. The TMUA is one piece of evidence among several. Admissions tutors read it alongside predicted grades, the personal statement, the school reference and, for some courses, an interview. A course that is heavily oversubscribed may look for a higher score than one that is not, and the same score can be strong for one course and ordinary for another.

Is your score good?

Before the test: using practice marks

A practice paper tells you which questions cost you marks, which is more useful than a predicted score. Keep a list of the mistakes, not of the topics, and time yourself at about 3 minutes 45 seconds a question. Your result is one overall score, so compare the two papers in practice instead: if your Paper 2 marks are much lower than your Paper 1 marks, the gap is in reasoning about mathematical arguments rather than in applying techniques, and the practice that closes it is different. Timed practice papers mark each paper and show every worked solution afterwards.

After results

The score goes automatically to the universities on your UCAS application whose course uses the TMUA, compulsory or optional; you cannot choose which of them see it. If you are sitting in January instead, start from the paper that cost you more marks in practice: the ten week January plan sets out the weeks.

Quick answers

How is the TMUA scored? You get one overall score from 1.0 to 9.0, to one decimal place. Papers 1 and 2 are scaled together, and scores are equated so that they compare across test versions and sittings.

What is a good TMUA score? It depends on the course. Use the scores or expectations each course publishes; there is no pass mark.
